Our first story for Black History Month is Mr. Elijah McCoy.
Elijah was the son of Mr. George and Mary McCoy. His parents were former salves from Kentucky. They escaped on the underground rail road. Elijah was born in Colchester Ontario, Canada. His family later moved back to the United States in Michigan. His parents heard about a school in Scotland and sent him there when he was 15. He attended that school for mechanical engineering. When he returned home from his studies to find a job he was denied. Most places wouldn't hire because of race still and skill didn't matter. He thought he settled and became a firemen and oilier for Michigan state. Here he learned how to oil engine parts as his regular duties.
Before I continue Mr. McCoy's story, I have to insert our-
Perspective Moment: Often times when we get denied after putting so much work into something like education, certificates , children, relationships and fiances. We feel frustrated because we do not receive immediate gain from the time we spent working on that thing. I imagined how Elijah must have felt. I am a black man who just studied to become a skilled engineer and because of my skin I cant get a decent job in my home town. I interject for him and say he basically said
"whatever" ill find something else and settle!
How many times have you settled because somebody told you no? More than this I could see God moving in his life as well. Did you see him to???
God was literally with him the entire way he helped his parents escape so that they can provide for the gift Ms. Mary was about to birth. He gave Elijah parents who noticed his ability to create and they sent him to a place were it could be cultivated. He learned while he was away the intricacies of the work and he was prepared for what came next even though it didn't look like it. [Blind Faith]
Would you believe me if I said even with your so called failures in life or mistakes, that they were really just a avenue for you to grow. Every thing you went through was to learn and create. I assume his dreams weren't even as BIG as god's clearly if Elijah had his way he would have came home applied for a engineering company and worked for somebody else making there inventions come to life.
Instead God saw a reason to curve his outlook on success. He was put into his DESTINY! You don't know why your working your job right now the lesson seem insignificant to what you see yourself doing in life. Okay, but when God is ready to reveal you he will also prove you. It's still your season, your still going to WIN but you must let the process work on you until your made to create what he see's that the world needs to hear or see. And he can trust that you know what your talking about because you have stood through every test and trial run.
You know how you enter into a website and they are offering a service or product and they offer you a "FREE TRIAL"- well that's what I see happened with Elijah, God allowed the no's from the jobs that he wanted coming from school to enter him into a free trial run of destiny. God offered him the job and gave him a choice!
Will you take something you've learned and make a fresh idea?
Or will you look at it and see a boring and lifeless job,degree,certificate, relationship,& bank account?
I am encouraged by Mr. Elijah McCoy.
In 1872 he invented an automatic lubricator that oiled evenly over train engines to operate for long periods of time.
"The Real McCoy" - This saying came from other engineers who wanted to view Mr. Elijah's work and the would often tell frauds we don't want the fakes we want the "the real McCoy". { Sound familiar, yup that's Mr. McCoy}
It's important to know your heritage and more about our culture. As a black women who lives in United Sates just like him I am encouraged by his life and his tremendous effort not to give up on being and inventor even if it meant taking a minor set-back.
I hope you were blessed by the story and life of Mr. Elijah McCoy!
